Pre-Cavers Dinner Social Trips

It looks like HCG will also be organising a number of pre-Cavers Dinner caving trips.  If you are interested please contact UTSSS, otherwise the invitation from Joe Sydney is:

It appears that the Seamus our annual cavers dinner guest speaker wants to go caving so will be coming to Sydney a day earlier. I’ve decided that we’ll do a day trip to Bungonia on Friday 26th October and do Drum Cave/Extension and The Ovens sea caves if tide allows on the Saturday. Let’s hope that we don’t get stuck in Drum cave eh!

HCG Bungonia GPS Plan

HCG, in conjunction with NPWS and local land owners, have organised a survey weekend. See the invitation below as well as the PDF. If you are interested contact Joe Sydney ([email protected]) directly.

Attached are details of the HCG Bungonia GPS/doline evaluation project weekend, 19/20 May. This will co-incide with the NSWS Speleological Council and it is planned to utilize cavers to assist with this project. Basically, we are missing cave data/ information from outside of the main Park, and, a few areas inside of the main Park. NPWS Bungonia National Park and the private property owner have given one off permission to access the small dolines and karst features on his property and owned by NPWS to collect this data. These cave/karst areas are not part of the main caving scene so it is an opportunity to visit them. It is also an opportunity for us to evaluate the dolines for rubbish and blackberry which will be tackled at a later date.

All HCG members are invited to attend as well as ASF clubs and cavers. If you feel that you would like to assist, please let me know by May 6th. A general notice is attached providing more information.

HCG/CSS Request for Help: Cavers Required for B4 Bridge Installation

This request comes from Joe Sydney of HCG so if you are interested please contact Joe directly at [email protected] Details:

Stage 3, installation of bridge section only in B4/Kings Cross-Bungonia.

Revised date: Fri 27, Sat 28 and Sun 29 May 2011

The paleo-sediments in the Kings Cross area of B4-5 need protection from constant over use. Approval has been granted by Parks to build a small bridge over the paleo-sediments to help preserve them.

On Feb 19th cavers took into B4 a single section of bridge lamination for a test installation and final measuring (Stage 2). The taking of the single lamination section into and out of the cave was not difficult and the test installation was successful.

We are now ready to install the bridge section (Stage 3) at B4/ Kings Cross. The vertical ladder section (Stage 4) will be added at a later date.

A limited number of experienced cavers are required to help take what is required into the cave, with bridge installation and removal of equipment etc.

All cavers will be given tasks based on their experience!

More details will be provided to ‘attending’ cavers when you register your attendance. Please let me know ASAP if you can assist.

Volunteer Work at Bungonia

The paleo-sediments in the Kings Cross area of B4-5 need protection from constant over use. Approval has been granted by Parks to build a small bridge over the paleo-sediments to help preserve them.

HCG & CSS in consultation with experts and BRAG submitted a proposal to bridge this gap. Parks (and engineers) have approved the project with Parks providing funding.

CSS is currently constructing the bridge which will require help from cavers to carry in the components at a later date. In the meantime, one section is ready to take into B4 to verify that it fits correctly and to measure for anchors & footings.

Experienced cavers are required to ‘take in and take out’ the first ‘test’ section of the proposed bridge. There will be other tasks for those that do not wish to help with the lifting! eg: Gear sherpas, COMMs line laying, UHF radio COMMs etc

We only require 10 competent cavers to help with lifting and carrying the component thru the cave and a few more for misc work. Please contact me ASAP if you can assist.
Do NOT turn up without informing me first as you may be disappointed!

This is an excellent opportunity for caving clubs/cavers to unite and help with such an important project.

Please contact Joe Sydney ASAP if you are interested: [email protected]
