WJ Trip Report

Just back from a quick trip to Wee Jasper and I’ve got to say that the country side is very green with the rivers up and the dams pretty much full.  However, the rainfall must be just enough to do that with little run off as the caves are still very dry.

On Saturday we had a late start as I only left Sydney at 6am but we were quickyl ready and headed into Dip Series.  Surprisingly Chris had never done Dip before and we spent a good few hours in there poking around.  We entered via the abseil entrance into Dip 4 at around 10:30am and headed down to Dip 5.  Predictably, Chris, Mark and Dave had a very good time trying every available squeeze and hole that they could find.  Mitchell was not to be outdone but as he is only five he had an unfair advantage in the tight squeezes.

From there we headed back up to the Dip 3 and double roped out the Rat Hole to Dip 2.  There was a group of Scouts doing the walk through section but luckily there is more than enough room in the Daylight Chamber for an army.  From there we exited the cave via the main route through the Rubbish Tip and, after pulling out the rope, were back at the car by 3:30pm.

After that I enjoyed a lazy afternoon in the sun but the others ducked up the hill for a quick run through Signature Cave before returning to camp at about 7pm.

On Sunday we had a quick jaunt through Dip 4 Extension AKA Gong Room.  We entered around 9:30 via a ladder that we rigged off the tow point of Chris’ Patrol and meandered through the rockpiles and rift chambers to the Gong Room.  We exited the cave around 11:30, headed back to camp and prepared for the drive back home.

Welcome To 2013

I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all the new members that signed up during Orientation Week. Welcome to the club and I hope that you enjoy the experience.

I also welcome our existing members back for 2013.  This is the first friendly reminder that membership renewals for 2013 are now due.  The PayPal payment buttons have been updated on the Join the Club page.  Alternatively we still accept cash renewals on the next trip.

We have a big year planned this year for the club.  Last year was the 40th Anniversary of the club and in true caver style we are a bit late in celebrating it.  Therefore, hold the weekend of 26-27 October in your diaries for the mammoth celebration.  We are planning on holding the event itself at Wee Jasper and are currently putting the final details together.

In the mean time the trips coming up for the next few months are:

  • 7th April: AGM and Vertical Training in Sydney.
  • 27/28 April: Caving with those vertical skills, location to be confirmed subject to permit availability.
  • 18-19 May: Bendethra.
  • 16-16 June: Jenolan Caving.

For full details and the complete calendar see the entire events listing on the upcoming events page.

Wee Jasper Beginners Trip (5-6 April 2008)

Last weekend was the annual first semester beginners trip. Numbers were looking like a huge weekend with 16 people committed at seven days out. But like all the best laid plans as the execution due closer there were a number of drop outs which left us with only eight people arriving at Wee Jasper:
