Basic Cave Surveying Course

Cost: $35 per person.

Both Hills Speleological Club and Highland Caving Group invite ASF cavers to attend a ‘basic’ cave surveyors course.

The basic cave surveying course is suited to a caver with little or no cave surveying knowledge. It will outline what you need to get started with cave surveying from:

• Cave surveying equipment
• Use of cave surveying equipment
• Working with cave surveying data,
• Map drawing, and
• Cave surveying software.

Part of the course will include a visit to Grill (B44) and one other cave to put to use your newly learnt skills, and, draw a cave map! There is a prize for best cave map produced!

Attending numbers are limited to ‘two (2)’ cavers per club. This is because of the teacher/student ratio that will ensure cavers gaining maximum attention.

The course will be held at the fully catered Bungonia conference room with all course material provided.

Included in the course fee is a Saturday evening BBQ, two lunches and morning/afternoon teas.

Place: Perth
Cost: $600 Sports Scholars, $650 Advantage Program Members, $700 everyone else. This includes 6 nights’ accommodation, 6 nights social pass, registration fees, transport pass and UTS team uniform including a polo shirt to keep. You will need to make your own way to and from Perth.

There are 30 sports on offer this year, and trials are coming up soon, so make sure you contact the relevant people as soon as possible if you’re keen to play!

This is a preliminary notice about the Wee Jasper Caves book launch on 21st August. Attendance is by invitation only – see details below

Geoff Kell is hosting the event at Careys Cave. HCG kindly volunteered to assist with the organisation of the event – thanks Joe Sydney! Accommodation is available at the Shearers Quarters or Cooradigbee Cottage a couple of kilometres from the cave, & there will be a BBQ on the Saturday. Don’t delay as space in the cave will be limited to about the 50 or so that we expect, and most will have to stay somewhere!

Or you can come just for the day, of course, & maybe the BBQ.

NEW WEE JASPER CAVES BOOK!! FREE TOUR OF CAREYS CAVE!! SEE OLD FOSSILS (Human & otherwise)!

The fantastic new Wee Jasper Caves book will be launched at a function at Careys Cave in August.

You are cordially welcome to attend.

This message is just to give you plenty of notice, so you can put the date in your diary. Invitations with final details will be mailed in a few weeks with a final RSVP date of 14th August.

WHERE & WHEN: Careys Cave, Wee Jasper, Saturday 21st August 2010, from 1.30pm

SO, WHERE’S CAREYS CAVE?

It’s 5km north of Wee Jasper village on a sealed road. If you have never visited Careys Cave before, you’ll be surprised. With over 1km of surveyed passage, it is highly decorated, with possibly the greatest variety of decorations of just about any single show cave tour in Australia. For those with a geological interest, fossils are clearly visible on the walls and ceiling, and there is is much evidence of the way the cave was formed, with some decorations “suspended” at head height after underlying sediments were washed out. The book contains a colour version of the superb map by Hills Speleology Club.

Full details will be sent with the written invitation, but the provisional plans are:

DATE: Saturday 21st August, 2010

TIME: From 1.30pm. After the launch at 2.30pm (which will be mercifully short!) there will be a complementary tour of the cave, hosted by the genial operator, Geoff Kell. With very little encouragement, Geoff might even be persuaded to deliver a song or two in the cave!

Refreshments will be provided before and after the event.

BARBECUE
Socialise with cavers new and (not so) old! Whether or not you are staying there, you will be warmly welcome at a BYO BBQ shortly after the launch, at the Shearers Quarters on Cooradigbee property (about 2km from the cave). $16 for main course, salad, dessert & conversation but must be booked & paid for in advance for catering purposes.

ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS

Highland Caving Group (who are helping organise the event) have booked the former Shearers Quarters on Cooradigbee property for Friday 20th and Saturday 21st August. It’s a large, fully renovated facility with 7 rooms accommodating up to 29 people. There’s a well-equipped kitchen, a very large common room with slow combustion wood heater and lounges to relax in, and a covered terrace overlooking the property. First in first served on the beds (& they’re going fast!), $16 a head per night. To cover costs, preference will be given to those booking for both Friday and Saturday nights, otherwise either night is OK. We are also booking nearby Cooradigbee Cottage which can accommodate another 6. For a few dollars less there are also camping options both on this property and at the Wee Jasper Reserve. OTHER ACTIVITIES

Well, you can go caving if you wish! Even if you don’t, you can visit the entrance chamber of Punchbowl Cave as it’s only a short scramble and is lit by daylight. And if there’s interest on Saturday or Sunday morning, we may organise a walk up to the Punchbowls, a series of dolines behind Punchbowl Cave.

Wee Jasper is a world renowned fossil site. A tour is available on either Saturday or Sunday which won’t clash with the launch, led by property owners Ian & Helen Cathles who have made a study of them. See below.

AND HOW MUCH WILL ALL THIS COST?

The launch and cave tour are free of charge, courtesy of Geoff Kell and ASF (however if you don’t buy a book, Geoff the Magic Dragon might not let you out of the cave!). However, after invitations are sent we will need numbers for catering and seating purposes, and payment for the book, BBQ & accommodation.

HOW TO GET AN INVITATION?

Attendance is by invitation only with an RSVP date of 14th August. People who have already booked or expressed an interest will receive a written invitation in about 10 days with full details of the program and payment methods. Otherwise, contact Jeanette Dunkley HIDDEN EMAIL for an invitation and full details (make sure you include a postal address as well as e-mail). Don’t delay as space in the cave is limited and we need numbers for catering purposes both there and at the BBQ. Any payment due will be needed by the RSVP date to keep your reservation.

The new book will be on sale of course, and (surprise!) we’d really like you to buy one (all net profits go to ASF), preferably in advance. The authors might even be persuaded to sign them for you!

SPECIAL FOSSIL TOUR

This tour is conducted by the property owners Ian & Helen Cathles, who have made a study of the Devonian fossils on Cooradigbee property, part of a world renowned fossil site at Wee Jasper. It is part of the Wee Jasper Naturally weekend events, so there may be others on the tour.

Why not visit the fossil site before or after the Wee Jasper book launch! Time allows on the Saturday AM and Sunday AM and PM to visit this fascinating location.
